How about a wiki integrated into the alteraforum website?
What does the community think about adding a wiki to the alteraforum site? The thought here is to use it as a repository for shared designs and documentation. The "Shared Materal" forum section hasn't worked to collect shared IP in this manner, it is overun with question threads instead. A wiki could collect and present in a more meaningful fashion and not clog with thread posts.
www.nioswiki.com has been fairly successful gathering a good amount of community developed designs/SW/IP that are shared through wiki. The navigation on nioswiki is not ideal in my view and a better wiki tool/structure could improve this. If we made an altera wiki that was clean and easy to use hopefully we could migrate nioswiki pages over. I don't know if that is possible though.
Another idea I have is to help promote community based HW/design collaboration. We could have wiki in the front end and then have the designs optionally hosted/stored on sourceforge.net or some other existing repository site with its hosted version control system. The poster of the IP could provide open access to their IP if they wish and let others modify and put back improvements and modifications. The link on wiki would always be up to date since the latest version sits on the hosted repository.
Thoughts or opinions? Would you like to put your shared hardware design on sourgeforge.net?

I think these are great ideas. I like the idea of using sourceforge. I agree the "Shared Material" section is not meeting its goal. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

I appreciate the idea. I remember, that good documentation stuff and example designs have been published at Altera Forum, now hard to find. Collecting these contributions can create a basis of the newly planned wiki.

I like the idea too. We could create standard designs and a kind of guides/FAQ on the wiki to redirect most frequent questions asked on the forum.

I do think sourceforge.net is a good idea and has a huge following. My one big concern is that it doesnt' have a good category for hardware/FPGA designs. Its all software projects and drivers in there, no hardware HDL designs. But perhaps we can break the mold here! There really isn't any good HDL collaborative repository that I can find anywhere on the web other than opencores.org . Opencores is more for IP cores and not full reference designs or example sharing. Also much smaller site and following than sourceforge.net and they have opposite problem of sourceforge - no embedded software project sharing.

I have found nioswiki to be a great way to share material with Nios II users. A more general Altera wiki would provide that same channel to non-Nios II collateral.
I also really like the idea to use sourceforge.net to provide some version control, since the highly open nature of a wiki site leaves room for anyone to accidentally break part of a design while attempting to share an improvement.

sounds like a great idea. i've never used sourceforge for my own projects, so i hope its not an overwhelming process just to upload a design. i have some things that i look forward to sharing.

Just a note that this is not forgotten. The wheels are in motion, we hope to have wiki in place by end of the summer!
